AR Baptist adds Wrestling!
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Arkansas Baptist College Athletic Director Charles Ripley and President Fitz Hill announced today that Arkansas Baptist College will add collegiate wrestling and women’s softball.
The 2011-2012 year will be the first season for both. Arkansas Baptist College will be the only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in Arkansas offering wrestling and the third college, overall, in Arkansas to add and compete in the sport.
Roosevelt Hadley has been named head coach of the wrestling team and Coach Ronald L. Roland will lead the women’s softball team. Coach Roland is the former assistant coach for J. A. Fair High
School girls softball team in Little Rock, and Hadley served as a volunteer wrestling coach at the Arkansas School for the Blind and Central Arkansas Christian School.
“With the rising popularity of wresting and softball in high school sports in Arkansas, we thought adding these two athletic opportunities would be a win-win for both Arkansas Baptist College and student athletes across the state and nation,” said Dr. Fitz Hill. “Part of our mission is to prepare students for a life grounded in social responsibility. We feel that by creating opportunities that promote diversity in gender and race we will only enhance our students’ ability to be successful and productive members in any community they choose to serve and live.” Arkansas Baptist College will wrestle in the Two Year College Division although it is a four year college. This will give wrestlers with Division I aspirations an opportunity to develop physically, and if needed academically and then have an opportunity to receive a scholarship from a four year wrestling program. The women’s addition of softball will increase the number of female athletic opportunities to four. Wrestlers who are interested in attending Arkansas Baptist College should contact Roosevelt Hadley at 501-231-9530 or email roosevelt.hadley@arkansasbaptist.edu.
Assistant Wrestling Coach Michael Daugherty can also be reached at 501-247-2307 or michael.daugherty@arkansasbaptist.edu.
They may also contact the Admissions Office at 501-370-4000 or Charles Ripley at cripley@positivekids.org.
